بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
First CaliphAs-Siddiq (The Truthful)Closest Companion

Introduction

Abu Bakr Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafa (may Allah be pleased with him), known as As-Siddiq (The Truthful), was the closest companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the first Caliph of Islam. His unwavering faith, loyalty, and sacrifice set an example for all Muslims to follow.

The First Man to Accept Islam

Abu Bakr (RA) was the first adult man to accept Islam. When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shared the message of Islam with him, he didn't hesitate for even a moment.

When Abu Bakr heard the message of Islam from the Prophet ﷺ, he immediately said: "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." He accepted without any doubt or questioning.

Seerah Ibn Hisham

Why was his acceptance so significant?

  • He was already known for his wisdom and integrity in Makkah
  • His acceptance lent credibility to Islam
  • He immediately began inviting others to Islam
  • Through him, many prominent Sahaba accepted Islam

The Title "As-Siddiq" (The Truthful)

Abu Bakr earned the title "As-Siddiq" during the Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj). When the Quraysh came to him saying that Muhammad ﷺ claimed to have traveled to Jerusalem and back in one night, his response was legendary:

"If he said it, then it is true. I believe him in what is greater than this - I believe in revelation coming to him from the heavens in the morning and evening."

Seerah Literature

This unwavering faith teaches us:

  • Trust in Allah and His Messenger completely
  • Don't let doubts shake your faith
  • Stand firm when others mock the truth

His Sacrifice for Islam

Financial Sacrifice

Abu Bakr (RA) spent his entire wealth for the cause of Islam. When preparing for the Battle of Tabuk, the Prophet ﷺ asked for donations:

The Prophet ﷺ asked: "O Abu Bakr! What have you left for your family?" Abu Bakr replied: "I have left Allah and His Messenger for them." He had brought his entire wealth!

Sunan Abi Dawud

Personal Sacrifice

  • He freed many slaves who had accepted Islam, including Bilal (RA)
  • He accompanied the Prophet ﷺ during the Hijrah (migration)
  • He risked his life multiple times to protect the Prophet ﷺ

The Cave of Thawr

During the Hijrah to Madinah, Abu Bakr (RA) accompanied the Prophet ﷺ. They hid in the Cave of Thawr while the Quraysh searched for them. This moment shows his courage and the Prophet's trust in him.

إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا

When he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us."

Quran 9:40

Abu Bakr was so concerned for the Prophet's safety that:

  • He entered the cave first to check for danger
  • He blocked holes in the cave with his own body
  • He was willing to sacrifice his life

His Humility

Despite being the closest companion and first Caliph, Abu Bakr (RA) remained humble:

  • He continued his trade as a cloth merchant even after becoming Caliph
  • He milked the goats for widows in his neighborhood
  • He would weep easily when reminded of Allah
  • He always put others before himself

Abu Bakr said: "I wish I were a tree that would be cut and eaten."

This showed his fear of standing before Allah for judgment, despite his great deeds

His Status in Islam

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I were to take a khalil (close friend) from my Ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr."

Sahih Bukhari & Muslim

The Prophet's Love for Him:

  • The Prophet ﷺ married his daughter Aisha (RA)
  • He made Abu Bakr lead the prayer during his final illness
  • He gave him the title "As-Siddiq"
  • He promised him paradise in his lifetime

His Death

Abu Bakr (RA) passed away on 23rd Jumada al-Akhirah, 13 AH (634 CE), at the age of 63 - the same age as the Prophet ﷺ. He was buried next to the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah.

His last advice to Umar (RA), his successor:

"Fear Allah, O Umar. Remember that Allah has deeds to be done during the day which He will not accept if done at night, and He has deeds to be done at night which He will not accept if done during the day."
